I listen before deciding
Our first conversation is about what has been happening in your life. I will not decide what you need before I have heard you properly.

Talk it throughAbout Stephen Stanton
I’m Stephen Stanton, a Clinical Hypnotherapist and RTT Practitioner based in Heaton Norris, Stockport.
Qualifications matter, but they are not the only thing that tells you whether somebody will understand you. I bring 35 years of listening to people, asking questions and helping them make sense of what has been happening in their lives.

The person you will be talking to
People sometimes arrive wondering whether they will say the wrong thing, be judged or struggle to explain themselves. I do not expect you to arrive with the right words. You can begin with what you have noticed and we will take it from there.
For 35 years, I have worked in Stockport in roles centred around interviewing, listening, employment support and workplace wellbeing. I have spoken with people at difficult points in their lives and learned that a qualification alone does not teach you how to make somebody feel heard.
I also know what it is like when work pressure follows you home. I have had times when I was still thinking about a difficult manager, customers and everything I had to deal with the following day. I know what it is like to wake in the night feeling tired while your mind carries on. Stress is not always something you can leave at work simply because the working day has finished.
I want you to feel that you are talking with me, not being talked at.Where it began
“Would you like to lead the class in a meditation?”One invitation opened up a completely new part of my working life.
Mindfulness, then RTT
I was attending a mindfulness class when the teacher asked whether I would like to lead the group in a meditation. Around that time, a YouTube video about RTT training appeared. It caught my attention, and in 2019 I began my RTT training.
What interested me was how much the beliefs people carry into adult life can be connected to experiences from much earlier on—sometimes to things they have never stopped to question.
During lockdown, I led weekly mindfulness sessions for colleagues for 12 weeks. Usually between 12 and 20 people joined each session. It showed me how valuable it can be to give people a little time to stop, breathe and feel that somebody understands the pressure they are carrying.
What matters to me
Professional, prepared and personal—without making therapy feel cold or more complicated than it needs to be.
Our first conversation is about what has been happening in your life. I will not decide what you need before I have heard you properly.
I read your intake form carefully and think about the questions I may need to ask. Your session does not begin with me knowing nothing about you.
You do not need clinical language or a perfect explanation. We can have an ordinary, honest conversation and take our time.
If I do not believe I am the right person to help, I will tell you. I will never promise a result simply to persuade you to book.
Are we a good fit?
Most people who contact me are not searching for a particular type of therapy. They want to know what I do, whether it may help them, whether they will feel comfortable talking to me and what it will cost.
That is why you cannot book yourself straight into a therapy session. We have a free telephone conversation first. You can ask me anything, I can understand a little about what is happening, and we can both decide whether I may be the right person to help.
