Deeply relaxed
Some people describe feeling as though they are floating, almost weightless, while the tension they arrived with begins to settle.

Most people who contact me have never heard of RTT, and many have never tried hypnosis. You do not need to understand therapy language before we talk.
I will explain what I do, answer your questions and make sure you know what to expect before you decide anything.

“Trust me, listen and let me guide you—but you remain in control.”
What does hypnosis feel like?
Many people feel deeply relaxed during hypnosis. Some describe floating or feeling almost weightless. Others feel calm and focused while remaining fully aware of my voice.
Some people describe feeling as though they are floating, almost weightless, while the tension they arrived with begins to settle.
You may feel very relaxed while still hearing my voice, noticing the room and knowing exactly what is being discussed.
Other people feel less physically relaxed but find it easier to concentrate, respond and notice thoughts they would usually rush past.
You do not have to perform, clear your mind or try to “go under.” If your experience feels different from somebody else’s, that does not mean you are doing it wrong.
You are relaxed, not powerless. You remain in control
You can speak, move, open your eyes or ask to stop whenever you choose. You will not tell me anything you do not wish to discuss, and I cannot make you do something that goes against your values.
I will ask you to trust me, listen and allow me to lead the session. That trust matters, but you are always an active part of what we are doing together.
If you find it difficult to relax or your mind wanders, I have other techniques I can use. We work with the way you respond rather than forcing you to match one idea of what hypnosis should look like.
Read the NHS overview of hypnotherapyRTT in plain English
RTT is a structured approach that uses hypnotherapy alongside ideas found in psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, solution-focused work and mindfulness.
In a session, we may explore how earlier experiences, other people’s words and beliefs about yourself could be connected to what is happening in your life now. We are not looking for somebody to blame. We are trying to understand why a pattern may once have made sense and why it may no longer be helping you.
That understanding is then used to help you think and respond differently. I create a personal recording using language that means something to you, rather than giving everybody the same generic script.
People respond differently. My role is to work carefully, prepare properly and be honest about what I can and cannot offer.
Where some patterns begin
“Whose voice does that sound like—and how long have you spoken to yourself in that way?”
The way parents spoke to children in the 1960s, 70s, 80s or 90s was often very different from the way people think about parenting now. A parent may have believed they were preparing you for life, while the words you heard left you feeling that your needs, views or feelings did not matter.
You may then grow into an adult who looks after everybody else, worries about what other people need and rarely speaks to yourself with the same kindness you offer them. Not every difficulty begins with a dramatic event. Sometimes it is years of small messages that you never stopped to question.
Hypnosis is not a way to recover a perfectly accurate recording of the past. Memory can be incomplete and influenced by many things. I am interested in what an experience came to mean to you—not in treating a memory as proof of exactly what happened.
We do not force a memory or decide in advance what the answer must be.A clear, unhurried process
You cannot book yourself straight into a session. We always speak first.
A free 20–30 minute telephone conversation lets you tell me what has been happening, ask questions and decide whether I may be the right person for you.
If we agree to continue, I send you an intake form tailored to what we have discussed. I read it carefully before you arrive.
We talk before the hypnosis begins. During the session I guide you, ask questions and use the techniques that best suit the way you respond.
I create a personalised recording for you to listen to for at least 21 days, with check-ins after three days, one week and three weeks.
Questions people often ask
You do not need to lose awareness or reach a particular depth. If you can listen, imagine and respond, we have something to work with. I also have different techniques available if one approach does not suit you.
No. You usually hear my voice and know what is happening throughout. Deep relaxation can feel dreamlike, but you are not unconscious.
You remain able to choose what you say. I will never ask you to surrender that choice, and you do not have to discuss anything you are not comfortable sharing.
Minds wander; it does not spoil the session. I can bring your attention back, change the way I am guiding you or use another technique.
No. We do not manufacture or force memories. Useful work can come from a feeling, an impression, a present-day belief or simply noticing a pattern that has been repeating in your life.
I do not sell a compulsory package. Many people begin with one session and allow at least 21 days to listen to their recording. If we work on the same issue again, the second session is usually around three weeks later. A third session is your choice.
No ethical therapist can promise a particular result. I can promise to listen, prepare carefully, work personally and tell you honestly if I do not believe I am the right person to help.
I mainly work face to face from Heaton Norris in Stockport, especially for RTT. Online sessions may also be possible when they are appropriate for you.
