Talk it throughHypnotherapy for fears and phobias in Stockport · Online across the UK
A phobia is not a lack of courage. It is a response your mind learned somewhere, usually for a reason that made sense at the time, and has been running ever since. Hypnotherapy may help you find where it came from and change how you respond to it.
You do not need to explain why it frightens you. You only need to want it to stop.

“Nothing is to be feared. It is only to be understood.”
Does any of this sound familiar?
People often arrive having spent years quietly arranging things so they never have to face the thing they fear. That takes more energy than most people realise.
You have not been abroad in years, or you get there white-knuckled and exhausted before the holiday has even started.
Motorways, bridges, roundabouts, driving alone. You have routes you take and routes you never take.
You have put off appointments, blood tests or treatment because the thought of it makes your chest tighten.
Rooms get checked, gardens get avoided, and you feel foolish for it even though the fear is completely real.
Stairs instead of lifts, aisle seats only, a quiet refusal to go up anything with a drop.
Presentations, weddings, meetings, even ordering food. The fear of being watched or judged decides what you do.
Fears and phobias can sit alongside anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety and trauma. If a fear is affecting your daily life, please speak to your GP as well. Hypnotherapy is not a substitute for medical or psychological assessment.
A question I often ask
“When is the first time you remember feeling that fear?”
Fear is a normal response to something genuinely threatening. It is useful. It keeps us alive. A phobia is a fear that has attached itself to something that is not, in itself, dangerous, or has grown far bigger than the actual risk. The body reacts as if the threat were real, because as far as the mind is concerned, it is.
Phobias start somewhere. A frightening experience, often in childhood. A parent who was afraid of the same thing. A moment of panic that got linked, in the mind, to whatever was happening at the time. Sometimes it is simply never having been near the thing, so it stayed unknown and unknown became frightening.
None of that makes the fear less real. It does mean it can be understood, and what is understood can be changed.
We look for where the fear began, not only what it attaches to now.How hypnotherapy may help
In person in Stockport and online across the UK, I use Clinical Hypnotherapy and Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) to help you access the part of your mind where the fear is stored, understand where it came from and change how you respond to it. You stay aware and in control throughout. There are no spiders in the room.
Under hypnosis we look back to where the fear first took hold. Often it is not where you expect. Understanding that alone can loosen its grip.
The fear is a learned reaction. Through hypnotic techniques, visualisation and suggestion, the mind can learn a different one.
You already have calm, capability and courage in other parts of your life. We help you bring them to the thing you have been avoiding.
Everybody responds differently. Some phobias shift in one session, others need more. I will not promise you will be on a plane next week, but I will tell you honestly what I think is realistic.
A clear, unhurried process
You cannot book yourself straight into a therapy session. We speak first.
A free 20–30 minute telephone conversation gives you space to tell me about the fear, how long you have had it and what it stops you doing.
If we agree to continue, you complete an intake form. I read it before we meet so I understand the history and what a good outcome would look like for you.
We explore where the fear began and the beliefs holding it in place. You remain aware and in control, and we never go faster than you are comfortable with.
Your personalised recording reinforces what we found. You listen for at least 21 days, and I check in after three days, at the end of the first week and again around week three.
Most people find one to three sessions is enough. There is no package to commit to.

35 years of helping people say the thing they were embarrassed to admit. Why work with me?
Over 35 years of working with people in Stockport, I have heard many say the same thing: “I know it is stupid, but…”. It is never stupid. A fear that has been running your decisions for years deserves to be taken seriously, and that is what happens here.
I talk naturally and I do not judge. Whether it is flying, spiders, needles or something you have never told anybody about, you will be treated as somebody who wants a bit more freedom, not as somebody who should just get over it.
I want you to leave feeling understood, not exposed.

“He took me back to scenes that helped me understand why I had felt this way my whole life.”
I found it so easy to go into hypnosis and Stephen talked me through the whole process. Listening to the recording has been a blessing.

No. Fear is a normal emotional response to a real threat, like being scared of the dark as a child. A phobia is an intense fear of something that is not, in itself, dangerous, or is far out of proportion to the risk. Fears often fade with time and exposure. Phobias tend to stay put, and sometimes grow, without help.
Many reasons. A frightening or traumatic experience, particularly in childhood. Learning it from a parent or family member who had the same fear. A moment of panic that got linked in the mind to whatever was happening. Or simply a lack of exposure, so the thing stayed unknown and frightening. Whatever the cause, phobias can be debilitating and are worth taking seriously.
No. I do not use exposure. We work with the memory and the belief behind the fear, not with the object itself. There will be no spiders, no needles and no lifts in the room.
Flying, driving, heights, needles and medical procedures, dentists, spiders and other animals, enclosed spaces, public speaking, social situations and many others. If it is something that frightens you far more than it should, it is worth a conversation.
Often anxiety and stress, low confidence, social anxiety, or past trauma. Sometimes the phobia is the visible part of something wider, and we may find it useful to look at that too.
Everybody is different. Some phobias shift in a single session. Others need two or three. After the first session you listen to your recording for at least 21 days, and we decide together whether another would help. There is no package and no pressure.
I offer in-person sessions in Stockport and online sessions across the UK. Most of my RTT sessions take place face-to-face, but for some fears online can feel easier, and we can discuss what suits you.
